The team here at LFRC would like to send out a huge thank you to John McAfee for donating an ultralight to us. The ultralight is a two-seat weight-shift aircraft. This incredible donation will be an invaluable help as we begin tracking Belize’s cats in the next few months and as we continue our crocodile surveys.

Wildcat Field Internship Position: Field Assistant

(3-6 month segments beginning in January 2012 with option to renew)

The Lamanai Field Research Center in Belize, in partnership with the University of Florida seeks a competent, self-motivated field assistant to implement and maintain a community-based landscape conservation program for wild cats which includes the jaguar, puma, ocelot, jaguarundi and margay. The internship is part of a greater effort to engage local communities in wildlife protection whilst minimizing threats to their farming operations in contact zones where people and wild animals are forced to share a landscape, for more information see website (http://www.lamanai.org/projects/cats/).

Duties include establishing and maintaining a camera trapping grid, tracking cats using prints, scat and signs, radio telemetry, GPS surveying, vegetation sampling, data entry and some data analyses and writing. The assistant must be field-oriented and able to work in adverse field conditions (i.e., heat and bugs) on a flexible schedule but also be a people-person to interact with landowners and community-members on a regular basis. Applicants must be versed in computer skills, be able to drive manual transmission and have experience with working on field projects. Experience with ATV’s and/or off-road driving and the ability to speak Spanish, is preferred but not required. International travel and full room and board will be covered for the duration of the internship.
